As environment and emissions grow as the major issue facing the commercial aviation industry globally, it is important that the industry is offered education and analysis on subjects that form parts of the debate. During Greener Skies 2007, our 2-day conference held in Hong Kong in March, it became evident that there was a lack of accurate information and analysis about Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) and delegate feedback showed that well rounded education programmes for the industry are in demand. To respond to this, Orient Aviation has developed the Greener Skies Seminar series which commences with the first topic – Emissions Trading Schemes – the fact and the fiction – to be held in Hong Kong in October, 2007.

Under the Greener Skies banner, we are excited to bring you the first in our ongoing environmental seminar series: Emissions Trading Schemes – the fact and the fiction.

Consumer and government pressure for airlines to offset or counter emissions through trading schemes can be costly and ineffective if not well thought out. Airlines in Asia-Pacific can learn from the European examples which have generated much debate on the effectiveness in ETS offsetting emissions and the lack of success in the eyes of their customers. British Airways learned about this recently, when they were targeted as Britain’s largest polluter even though they had a diverse and comprehensive emissions offset scheme in place.

Through this seminar, you will hear from experts on all sides of the ETS debate and learn about the successful (and some unsuccessful) elements of an emissions trading scheme. When designing or consulting on a scheme for your organization, it is crucial that the process is inclusive and our speakers will share with you their insights on making these programmes work.
