Asia-Pacific international air passenger traffic close to “a standstill”

Airlines in the Asia-Pacific flew 1.3 million passengers on international flights in January 2021, down 96.1% from 33.5 million in the same months in 2019, figures from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) published today showed. Read More » The January figure also was a decline of 16%, from 1.6 million international passengers, in December. “Renewed efforts to contain COVID-19 with lockdowns and border restrictions have affected international passenger demand, which remains close to a standstill,” AAPA director general, Subhas Menon, said. "In this extremely challenging operating environment, airlines are struggling to survive." The AAPA figures are an aggregation of traffic data from 40 Asia-Pacific based carriers.
