Bangchak Group has inaugurated its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Production Unit at the Bangchak Phra Khanong Refinery, becoming Thailand’s first dedicated facility producing 100% Neat SAF, the Bangkok Post reports. Read More » The unit oversees the entire value chain, from feedstock procurement and processing to product distribution under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme. With an initial production capacity of one million litres a day, the facility employs Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology that converts used cooking oil into high-quality SAF. The production process was developed with Desmet of Belgium, a specialist in pretreatment technologies, and the U.S.’s UOP Honeywell, a pioneer in hydro processing systems. In 2008, Bangchak launched a used cooking oil buy-back program with communities and networks. Through “Fry to Fly”, members of the public can sell used cooking oil to the refiner at more 290 Bangchak service stations nation-wide. The campaign aims to expand its collection points to 2,000 stations by year end and is preparing to implement a Book & Claim system that offers passengers and airlines the option to claim SAF usage and receive verified carbon reduction credits for the usage.
