India’s lawmakers warn of risks to flying from chronic shortage of air traffic controllers

An India parliamentary committee on aviation has warned staffing shortfalls at the country’s air safety regulator and insufficient air traffic controllers are a threat to air safety. Read More » The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is grappling "with a profound and persistent shortage of technical and regulatory personnel" with almost half of its posts unfilled, the committee reported. The problems are caused by an outdated model that authorizes recruitment agencies to employ staff on behalf of the DGCA. The civil aviation ministry, which oversees the DGCA, described the process as "slow and inflexible", making it challenging to attract and retain highly skilled professionals.
