Sri Lanka government sets up independent review of national carrier

The Sri Lanka government has appointed a committee to conduct an independent strategic review of national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, to be chaired by senior presidential advisor on the digital economy, Hans Wijayasuriya. Read More » The committee has been tasked with assessing the airline’s strategic direction and to recommend possible restructuring models to the government. It will also provide oversight, guidance and support to implement the government’s preferred model for a restructuring of the national carrier. "The government has recognised the urgent priority of undertaking a comprehensive strategic review of SriLankan Airlines, taking into account the broader macroeconomic context," the Office of the President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said. "The main objective of this exercise is to establish a financially sustainable and commercially efficient national carrier, while reducing the long-term fiscal burden on the government." The government has also appointed Dimal Arandara as the chair of SriLankan Airlines on a permanent basis. Arandara, who had been acting chair since Sarath Ganegoda resigned from the board in March this year, is also a member of the committee.
