China Southern Airlines reports 8.4% decline in passengers for May

China Southern Airlines (CSA) flew 13 million passengers on its domestic, international and regional flights in May, down from 14.2 million in the same month a year ago. Read More » The decline was due to the number of domestic passengers slumping 10.4% to 11.1 million in the month. Helping offset those declines were the 5.6% increase in international passengers to 1.8 million and 1.4% rise in regional travellers to 157,220. Passenger load factor was down 1.2 percentage points to 84.7% as capacity contracted 2.9% year-on-year and demand, or revenue passenger kilometres, dropped 4.2%. At the end of May, CSA had 969 aircraft, up from 966 at April 30. During May, CSA added two 737 MAX 8s, two 321neos and one A320neo, and withdrew a 737-700 and a 787-8 from the fleet.
