VietJet reported seeking permission to launch domestic operations in Australia

VietJet Air has applied to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for an air operator certificate to launch domestic flights within Australia, local media reported. Read More » If approved, the LCC would establish a subsidiary and operate under a separate brand name. Initially, the new carrier will operate 10 Boeing 737 aircraft on flights within the Sydney-Melbourne-Brisbane triangle. The Australian federal government has confirmed that a “new entrant” has requested 2,252 take-off and landing slots at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport. It did not specify the name of the airline. The last foreign airline trying to break the Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia duopoly was Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) former LCC brand, Tiger Airways, which entered the market in 2007. In 2013, it was merged into Virgin Australia and rebranded Tigerair Australia. It ceased operations in 2020.
