October 28th 2026
Virgin Australia (VA) has introduced items such as hot chips and matcha lattes to its buy-on-board economy food offering, while adding new meal options for those travelling in its business class cabins. Read More » The airline said it tested the cooking process over many months to ensure the hot chips, priced at A$12 (US$8.43), served at 36,000ft were comparable to what they were on the ground. "We’re always looking for ways to bring the food people love on the ground into the air," VA chief customer officer, Andrew Cleary, said. "Hot chips are a great example, with no Australian airline believed to have served them onboard before. It’s taken months of testing to get them hot and crispy in the air. They’re also the perfect match for our cheeseburger toastie, which we launched a few months ago and have already sold more than 50,000 of." The new economy buy-on-board menu was rolled out on all flights yesterday (October 27), while the new business class meal items will be available from November 11.
