Hanoi-headquartered low-cost carrier, VietJet Air, has confirmed an order for an additional 50 A321neo, finalising a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the Farnborough Airshow last July. Read More » The purchase agreement was signed in Hanoi by VietJet president and CEO, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, and Airbus CCO, Christian Scherer and witnessed by Vietnamese prime minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and French prime minister, Edouard Philippe.

“The fuel efficient A321neo will enable us to increase capacity and help us to expand the network significantly, especially on international routes,” said VietJet president and CEO, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao. “We are honoured to be a long-term partner of VietJet and to finalise this new order,” said Scherer. “The airline’s latest preference for the Airbus product, in particular the A321, is a testimony to VietJet’s professionalism and a great endorsement for the A321 in the highly competitive market.”

The purchase commitment increased Vietjet’s order for A320 Family aircraft to 171 aircraft, including 46 already delivered. The order backlog is 120 A321neo and five A321ceo.

In 2016, the LCC committed to 100 B737 MAX 200s, with deliveries scheduled from next year. Last July, it signed a MoU for 100 more B737MAXs: 80 B737MAX 10s and 20 B737MAX 8s, valued at US$12.7 billion at list prices. Analysts estimated the Boeing deal is worth double that of the 50 A321neo confirmed this week.

VietJet have agreed a MoU with CFM International for the long-term support of the LEAP-1B engines that will power the 100 high-density MAX 200s, at list prices of U$5.3 billion, the budget carrier said.

“The LEAP-1B has been doing extremely well in commercial service in the last 18 months, and we believe the engine will prove to be an important asset for VietJet over the long term,” said CFM vice-president of sales and marketing, Philippe Couteaux.

The A321neo is the largest member of the Airbus single aisle family and seats up to 240 passengers in a single class layout. It offers the longest range in its category, flying up to 4,000 nautical miles non-stop. The A320 Family has received more than 14,700 orders. More than 8,000 of the type are in service with 334 airlines.
