Finnair receives more access to secondary Chinese cities. Read More »

Finnair has disclosed details of codeshares with two Chinese airlines. Following an initial announcement about partnering with China Southern, Finnair’s Helsinki-Guangzhou route will be converted from seasonal to year-round, although winter will only see two weekly flights. China Southern will code on the intercontinental flight and beyond to nearby destinations (in Scandinavia and Riga) and elsewhere in Europe (Amsterdam, London and Paris).

Finnair will codeshare on China Southern to eight mainland Chinese cities, but only from Guangzhou. This includes five new codeshare destinations. Finnair recently moved to Guangzhou’s terminal two.

A similar agreement has been reached between Finnair and Juneyao. Helsinki will be Juneyao’s inaugural long-haul 787 destination. Juneyao will code on Finnair’s Helsinki-Shanghai services and five domestic Finnish cities served from Helsinki. Juneyao is not codesharing to Finnair’s European network. Finnair in turn will have domestic codeshares on Juneyao from both Shanghai and Nanjing, which Finnair also serves.

Since exiting SkyTeam, China Southern has been open to new partnerships, particularly with oneworld members since they lack a domestic Chinese partner. Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines is not a member of an alliance but has ties to Star Alliance and SkyTeam. Juneyao has an equity relationship and codeshare with SkyTeam’s China Eastern while Juneyao codeshares with Air China and is a Connecting Partner for Star, which Air China is a member of.
