Government backed committee to investigate Air India fatal crash

India has set up an expert committee to examine the cause of the fatal crash of Air India flight AI 171 on June 12. Read More » The Ministry of Civil Aviation said the committee’s role will be independent and not a substitute for enquiries already underway. Flight AI171, operated by 787-8 registration VT-ANB, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick. There was one survivor among the 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. The committee is specifically tasked with reviewing existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), guidelines to prevent and handle such incidents and formulating SOPs and post-crash protocols. The committee is chaired by India’s Home Secretary and its members are drawn from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Indian Air Force, the Gujarat Home Department, the State Disaster Response Authority and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
