Recently, Panamanian and Paraguayan media reported on developments that could lead to new nonstop air links between Asia and Latin America. Read More »

Earlier this month, All Nippon Airways (ANA) visited Tocumen International Airport in Panama on an evaluation tour studying the launch of the Tokyo-Panama City route. ANA executives and Boeing technicians inspected runway capabilities and facilities needed to support aircraft, accompanied by representatives from Panama’s Civil Aviation Authority, Foreign Ministry, and Copa Airlines. For ANA, combining the nonstop flight to Panama with a partnership with Copa Airlines, a carrier with a network of more than 80 destinations across North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean, would allow it to offer one-stop access from Tokyo to multiple destinations in the region.

This week, The Asunción Times reported that the Paraguayan government has entered into discussions with China Airlines (CAL) and EVA Airways to explore establishing a new direct air route between Taipei and Asunción. The initiative, led by Paraguay’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce, aims to leverage Paraguay’s strategic location to establish it as a key logistics hub and connection point for South America. A Paraguayan delegation presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s potential, highlighting the sustained growth in trade between Paraguay and Taiwan over the past decade as a key driver for the proposed air link. In addition to a direct route, the parties also analyzed an alternative connectivity model, following an Asia-United States-South America path, a concept designed to integrate with the existing US network of the Taiwanese carriers.
