Australia’s domestic fares lower this month

Australia’s domestic passengers are receiving some air fare relief this month with fares in both economy and business lower than a year ago, government figures show. Read More » Australia’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) monthly report said its measure of best discount economy fares has fallen 1.7%, or 1.3 index points, to 73.9 points in September. The measure of restricted economy fares was also lower, by 1.3 index points, or 2%, at 64.9 points. The largest decline in the month was for those travelling at the front of the aircraft - the BITRE measure of business class airfares was 11.8% lower year-on-year at 52.2 points. "The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes," BITRE said. "It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers." Australia’s two major airline groups, Qantas Group and Virgin Australia, both reported strong travel demand in the domestic market in their 2025/26 full year financial results released last month.
