There were 51 aircraft accidents among the 38.7 million flights flown last year, representing one accident for every 760,000 flights. Read More » This was down from 54 aircraft accidents from 37.9 million flights, or one accident every 700,000 flights, in 2024, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) 2025 annual safety report said. "Flying is so safe that even one accident among the nearly 40 million flights operated annually moves the global data," IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said. "Every accident is, of course, one too many. The goal for aviation remains zero accidents and zero fatalities." There were eight fatal accidents last year and 394 onboard fatalities last year, including an Air India 787-8 operating flight AI171, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad bound for London on June 12. There was one survivor among the 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. It was the deadliest commercial aviation accident since the loss of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 with 239 passengers and crew on board in 2014. "Although the industry recorded a slight improvement in the overall accident rate in 2025, the year was overshadowed by several high-profile events that had a disproportionate impact on public perception and global fatality figures," the IATA report said. There were six accidents among Asia-Pacific carriers last year, down from seven in 2024.
