India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined IndiGo 222 million rupee (US$2.4 million) and issued the LCC’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, a formal caution for cancelling more than 1,000 flights in early December which left thousands of passengers stranded. Read More » The airline has also been ordered to provide a bank guarantee for 500 million rupee, which will be returned in phases only after the DGCA has verified the LCC has implemented systemic reform measures. The DGCA caution was issued to Elbers for "inadequate oversight of flight operations", IndiGo said in a regulatory filing. The DGCA also issued warnings to the chief operating officer and three other senior executives, including calling for the senior vice president for the operational control centre to be relieved of his current operational duties and not be assigned any accountable position. "From an operational standpoint, DGCA has noted that the company restored normal operations within a short period following the December 2025 disruptions," IndiGo said. "The company is in the process of reviewing the DGCA orders and will take necessary actions as may be required."
